Among the choir members was one alto singer senior gentle man who was a young boy singing soprano during kabaka Mutesa's wedding, who also perfomed as an existing choir member at the wedding of the son Kabaka Muwenda Mutebi, which was astonishing to show the existance of the choir for decades, though with different members.

The Choir Evolution

The Namirembe Cathedral Choir started over a century ago mixed boys and girls but changes had to occur during the times of President Idi Amin Dada and a new system was introduced of the choir consisting only boys and men, to stay focused and concentrating on the work of serving God.

As the conductor of the choir Mr. Nkugwa, during the times of President Milton Obote, the choir evolved into a disciplined organization and due to his strict leadership, singing the correct notes and keeping your breath through the chant was the number one priority. Along his side was Ms. Soul who moved later to Australia to persue his music career.

Later Mr. Mubiru Michael took over as the conductor of Namirembe Cathedral Choir who conducted for several years and later lost his life in a car accident, may his soul rest in peace.

Mr. Sekibaala John, Mr. Mutesasira Derik, Mr. Luggya Paul and many others are among the 60 and above active members who took over the duties of the choir. These are the times when the choir with the avaiability of social media, has exposed itself to the world in the name of delivering the gospel to the rest of the world as Christ sent them to do.

The Choir Duties

As the rest of evangelists, the Namirembe Cathedral Choir has maintained its duty to spread and deliver the gospel through hymns, psalms, anthems and many other tools of music. While the preachers like Reverends, Bishops and other priests spread the word through speech, the choir adds vocals to the same message and indeed it touches souls and heals all wounded hearts.

The choir managed to give comfort to the Ugandan Christian population during the lockdown times of COVID19 by delivering church services and prayers every Sunday 10am, through social media mainly YouTube. Not only in Uganda but also those overseas have engaged and attended to these services via internet and because of this, the Namirembe Cathedral Choir has been blessed as well as a blessing to the world.
